Western Montana’s Blackfoot watershed is home to a unique community forest model, formed when the Blackfoot Challenge acquired 5,600 acres as part of Plum Creek Timber’s sale of thousands of acres of former corporate timber land. Now in conservation ownership and managed by a community council, the Blackfoot Community Conservation Area (BCCA) is stewarded in partnership with adjacent public lands to perpetuate vibrant natural resources and diverse recreation opportunities. The hike, offered in partnership with Wild Montana and the Blackfoot Challenge, will spotlight conservation practices designed to restore the landscape, from prescribed fire to aspen protection to wetlands restoration. In addition to serving as a living laboratory of conservation and stewardship, the BCCA is home to many diverse wildlife species, including moose, elk, grizzly bears, wolves, owls, swans, and dozens of other bird species. We will hike around Doney Lake and observe a variety of bird and animal life. Following this first loop, we will also offer a second loop hike for those participants interested in seeing more of the forest habitats, wildflowers, and conservation work.
