Trumpeter Swan Release Day

9:00 AM Thursday, September 5, 2019
Jones Lake, Rolling Stone Ranch, Ovando

After a two-year hiatus, Trumpeter Swan Release Day is returning to Ovando. Five yearling trumpeter swans will be released on the morning of Thursday, September 5. This spring marked the 9th year in a row that trumpeter swans successfully nested in the valley for possibly the first time in over 200 years. As nests continue to succeed year after year, the Blackfoot Trumpeter Swan Restoration Program is nearing its goal and releases will no longer be needed in the near future. Join us to take part in this historic effort!

  • Hear the incredible story about how the restoration program in the Blackfoot began.
  • Learn about trumpeter swan biology, habitat and the key components of the restoration process.
  • Participate in learning stations about wetland ecology, bird watching, invasive mussels, and wetland soil health.
  • And, WIN THE CHANCE TO RELEASE A SWAN! Raffle tickets will be available for purchase the morning of the release for $20 each.

Directions to Jones Lake: Approximately 1/2 mile west of Ovando on Highway 200, turn north on gated dirt road (look for signage). Then drive approximately 1 mile to the release site. Carpooling is encouraged.
